What We Do

Democracy & Inclusion

Equipping citizens with the knowledge and tools needed to understand governance processes, rights, and responsibilities — enabling informed and active participation.

Democracy and inclusion are at the heart of everything we do at Tunani Initiative. We believe that a thriving democracy is one where every citizen — regardless of gender, age, ethnicity, or geography — has a meaningful voice in decisions that shape their lives. Our work in this area focuses on bridging the gap between citizens and governance institutions, making civic participation accessible, informed, and impactful.

Through targeted civic education programmes, community dialogues, and youth-led advocacy campaigns, we equip citizens with the knowledge and tools needed to understand governance processes, rights, and responsibilities. We work with a wide range of stakeholders — from local government officials to grassroots community groups — to foster environments where participation is not only possible but encouraged.

Our programmes have reached thousands of citizens across Nigeria, with a particular focus on underrepresented communities, including women, youth, and rural populations. We use both in-person and digital channels to maximise reach, ensuring that civic information is available in formats and languages that communities can engage with. Each intervention is designed with sustainability in mind — building local capacity rather than creating dependency.

Partnerships are central to our approach. We collaborate with civil society organisations, academic institutions, development partners, and government agencies to amplify impact and create the systemic change needed for truly inclusive democratic governance. Our work is grounded in research, informed by community feedback, and guided by the principle that people are the most powerful agents of change in their own governance systems.

Our Approach to Inclusion

Inclusion is not an add-on for us — it is foundational. We design every programme with an intentional lens on who is excluded from civic spaces and why. Our inclusion framework addresses barriers of information, geography, language, and social norms that keep certain groups from participating. We have developed tailored toolkits for marginalised communities and trained hundreds of community facilitators to deliver civic education in ways that resonate locally.

We also engage with policymakers and governance institutions to advocate for structural changes that lower barriers to participation. From supporting the implementation of inclusive electoral frameworks to pushing for accessible public consultation processes, our policy engagement is designed to ensure that the gains made at the community level are reinforced at the institutional level.

As the political landscape continues to evolve — shaped by technology, shifting demographics, and new forms of civic engagement — Tunani remains committed to adapting our approaches and ensuring that democracy in Nigeria is deepened, not hollowed out. We measure our success not just in numbers reached but in the quality of participation we enable and the lasting change we help communities create.
