Our Story

Empowered Citizens.
People-Centred
Governance.

How a voter education campaign in 2022 grew into a movement for democratic participation across Nigeria.

Our Mission

To cultivate an informed and active citizenry by equipping and propelling citizens towards purposeful civic engagement.

Our Vision

A society where empowered citizens shape people-centred governance.

From a Campaign
to a Movement

Founded by Mariam Mairo Ibrahim, Tunani Initiative is a non-partisan, youth- and women-led non-profit organisation committed to fostering a society in which citizens' voices significantly impact governance.

The initiative commenced in 2022 with the "Let's Vote 9ja" campaign, which aimed to educate and register voters in preparation for Nigeria's 2023 elections. In collaboration with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Tunani successfully registered over 100 new voters and provided education to more than 1,500 individuals in resettlement communities within the Federal Capital Territory.

Insights from this project and Mairo's subsequent engagement with the National Assembly during the 2025 budget cycle, combined with the lived experiences of young Nigerians, shaped Tunani's belief that civic engagement is essential for a functional democracy.

Officially registered in March 2025, Tunani now works across four thematic areas: Democracy and Inclusion, Peacebuilding, Climate Democracy, and Information Ecosystems.
